Stories & Inspiration
Read below to see all the amazing ways the Mozilla community shared, gave, engaged, created, and collaborated during the week of September 14-21, 2009, by using the Internet to make a difference in people's lives.
People from all over came together to make a difference in their local community, and helped fellow public benefit organizations gain from the open Web. Thank you for taking part in Mozilla Service Week. Thank you for joining the cause - you made a difference.
Travelers' Philanthropy- "Giving Time, Talent or Treasure"
The Travelers' Philanthropy Program with the Center for Responsible Travel has been active and growing since 2004. The film above was commissioned to help explain the process and movement of travelers' philanthropy. Since then a website has been created to fill the needs of worthy sustainable business projects in tourism destinations around the world from travelers' donations. Our website allows travelers returning from their responsible travel vacations to give to the inspiring community and conservation projects that they visited. We in turn provide tax benefits, and updates about the projects and the positive impact the travelers' donations have made.
While our website has been effective in raising funds for the tourism destination projects, we still need assistance from a talented web design person to streamline the donation process and create a landing page in a reorganization effort of the website. Related Link

Domestic Violence Website Could Help More
Hi,
We are looking for help revamping our website so that its more accessible to clients and potential volunteers and donors.
This past year we added a Google translation tool that helps translate our website to a number of different languages - we have since had 6 different clients come in because we are the only shelter in the area to offer this service.
We know we can do more. This was the most recent update in 3 years - we need your help to update our website further so that we can reach more people.
Please contact Melissa E at Samaritan House if you're interested in learning more about us - melissae@samaritanhouseva.org.

Creative Commons Advice Booth
Many non-profits want to get their content out there in the open, but they just don't know how. To meet this need, I plan to offer open content advice and inspiration to the 150 .orgs and social entrepreneurs at Toronto's Centre for Social Innovation. I will start with a lunch time screening of RIP: A Remix Manifesto (the inspiration part). Then I will run a Lucy-Van-Pelt-esque Creative Commons info booth in the lunch area for a couple of hours (the advice part). Anyone who wants to help with CC advice -- or who wants to offer advice on another open web topic -- is invited to join in. Simple vision: CC advice and a movie. Could grow into: a full fledged Open Web Advice Fair if others pitch in. If you want to help, post a comment on my related blog post (see 'related link' below). Related Link
TutorsForAll.org Development and Design
I'll be helping to fully redesign the site for the nonprofit, NGO, Tutors for All and write the (standards compliant) coding for it and lay a foundation that will allow them to easily be able to add to and update the site freely just as Michael Buckley and Otto de Voogd have done for me with AccessFirefox.org. I suppose that I'm paying it forward.
I may suggest using WordPress to Tutors for All for ease of adding new content and maintenance and if they decide that is what they'd like to do, then I'll help with installation, setup, brand and customize a theme, etc.
I plan on providing future help and support when/where I can as well.
Coincidentally, Tutors for All is based in my home state (and current place of residence) Massachusetts. Related Link

Youth Art Haven Website
Youth Art Haven's purpose is to respond to the youth in Brazil who face the risk of or have been victimized by exploitation. Youth Art Haven's eco-cultural center will integrate the arts, art-therapy and permaculture in a multi-faceted, culturally relevant response to commercial and sexual exploitation of children and adolescents in Northeast Brazil. Unifying the arts, therapy and ecology is a unique, innovative approach to effectively attend to this underserved population, providing prevention and victim support services. YAH will establish a safe, ecologically responsible space for rescued exploited youth to reside and receive psychological support and for at risk youth to benefit from job and life skills training. Comprehensive programming will address the emotional, educational and professional needs for successful integration into Brazilian and global society for local youth, and attend to the psychological and social needs of victims of sexual exploitation.
We are a start-up organization and need help updating and re-thinking our website. Related Link
Volunteer Scheduling online
We have 500 volunteers who regularly give tours at our two museums - Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio in Oak Park, Illinois and Wright's prairie masterpiece, the Frederick C. Robie House in Chicago.
Volunteers can request specific tour times, or they can offer us a window of time, or a range of daily availability. Each month our tour coordinator creates a schedule for each museum, by hand, on an Excel spreadsheet. This is timeconsuming and laborious, and very inefficient.
We would like to automate this process and then publish the schedule to our online volunteer community and let the volunteers self-select any remaining, open tour times. Related Link
Lyantonde Connected: Bringing Internet to rural Uganda
In rural Uganda, most teachers, students, farmers, business owners, and health care providers work without access to information and communication technologies that can transform their lives in simple yet profound ways. Project Focus and our local partner organization ICOD, believe than an Internet cafe in Lyantonde, Uganda will provide public access to vital information at an affordable price, allow for new computer and Internet users to familiarize themselves with the benefits of I.T., provide the space and equipment for the production of community-driven multi-media creative projects, and provide an income to financially support Prince Primary School. The Internet café will use low-powered computers and solar energy from Inveneo Inc, a company that has provided communication and technology solutions to more than 250 rural communities in 22 countries.
Project Focus is launching an awareness/fundraising campaign for the implementation of the Internet cafe, and is looking for assistance to improve our web presence to grow our support network for the project. Related Link
